What is something that seemed right to a lot of people historically, but now is actually known as not good?
Is there a current example you can think of today that a lot of people think is good, but probably isn’t?
Competence vs Confidence
“The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps. The wise fear the LORD and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.”
- Proverbs 14:15-16 (NIV)
What is a fool?
Do you know what the Biblical definition of a fool is?
How much do you think the media you consume (things you read, watch, or listen to) affects how you think?
What affects have you seen in others?
Have you seen any effects in yourself?
What was your response to that realization?
What is something that adults are free to do legally, but is destructive or really unwise?
What is something that teenagers are free to do legally, but is/can be destructive or really unwise?
Why might it be problematic to make some of these things illegal, or impossible to do?
If you could, what activities might actually be a good idea to make impossible or illegal for adults or for teens, in your opinion?
In Proverbs 14:16 I also read the word “prudent”…and I don’t use that word often, do you?
What does it mean to be prudent? Can somebody look up that word for me?
Ethics or morality can help to keep us safe from harming each other when laws don’t get enforced or respected. If everyone makes up their own different ideas about what is right and wrong, it can be hard to prevent chaos and lawlessness, and difficult to find a way to live in peace with each other.
What is something we can do this week to apply some of the wisdom we read about in Proverbs?
