Karyn’s Discussion:

If someone watched how you treat others for a week, what would they think matters to you?

How do our actions communicate what we believe—even if we don’t say anything?

What do you think has more influence – how we live or what we claim?

3 “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” -1 John 2:3-6

This verse says that if we know God, we keep his commands. What are his commands?

It also says that claiming to live in God means living like Jesus did. What do you think that looks like?

Even when we are doing our best to live like Jesus, we might mess up- does that mean we are liars? What do we do if we mess up?

The first two verses of this chapter say, “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

The things we do that distance us from living like Jesus or separate us from God are called sins. If we don’t care about that distance or try to close it, can we really say we know God? If we believe what the Bible says, we know that Jesus took our place to pay the price for our sins- saying we know him, we believe in him, we love him, means living like him. Not just when people are watching – always. How you think, how you talk, how we treat people, they all matter. Cheating matters. Lying matters. Sneaking around matters. The words you choose matters. Even when you think nobody knows, God does.

So thinking again about somebody watching you for a week as a way to determine what matters to you – what are things you are doing well, and what are things you need to change to make your actions match what you say you believe?
