Discussion: Good and Bad

What does it mean for something to be good or bad?

Do we define it for ourselves, or is there a source for this information?

What happens when you and others disagree about whether or not something is bad or good?

We are not often challenged with conflicting human laws and Gods laws, but we should be prepared for when the time comes that we are. I expect that this will happen. Many people in history have stood up against an unjust law and suffered consequences, but it was still worth suffering for. Can you think of any examples of people who were punished for breaking a law while obeying God at the same time?

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”
-Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)

God defines good and evil, and He offers a special multifaceted blessing for those who avoid evil and lies.

“Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry;”
-Psalm 34:12-15 (NIV)
