Talk: “Saved” -by Cyndi

What does being “saved” mean?

(Okay, quick recap on what we mean by saved:)

We all have some measure of evil in us. It’s kind of a strong word, but hear me out. We like to define what good and evil is ourselves, but that’s what got us into this mess in the first place. The evil of murder, Jesus says is the same thing as hatred. The evil of stealing, comes from a strong desire for things that aren’t ours. The evil of rape or adultery (fooling around with someone else’s Spouse) is the same thing as oogling someone, which is using someone for our personal enjoyment or satisfaction. God is not cool with ANY of it, and it actively destroys us and our relationship with him, because he has no evil in him and if we were to be actually physically in his presence, we would just drop dead.

Now, God is still ultimately in charge, and he still loves us, so he came up with a plan to heal our broken world, our broken lives, and make it so we can be close to God again. And that plan is Jesus who

⁃ A: Took a punishment that we deserve so that we can be cool with God again

⁃ B: then hang out in our heart to make it so we can start saying ‘no’ to doing evil and ‘yes’ to doing good, and

⁃ C: One day will come as the ultimate king and heal our world of ALL the fallout of evil.

So what naturally awaits us is evil (both in us and around us), death, and separation from God, then being “saved” is deciding we want in on this whole Jesus-healing-me-and-the-world-thing. Life, healing from evil, taking part in helping heal the world.

(Recap over.)

How do I get saved? How do I know I’m saved?

2 for 1, same answer

“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.  13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” -Romans 10:9-10, 13

But then we still do some of the things that God is not cool with, does that mean I’m not saved?

“So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.” -Romans 3:28

“Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.” -Romans 3:31
