Ezra’s Talk: Breaking The Law

⁃ 8:00-8:25 PM

⁃ “Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead—whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” -Acts 5:25-32 (NIV)

⁃ Does God want us to be lawbreakers?

⁃ When is it ok to break a law in God’s eyes?

⁃ What can happen to us when we break an unjust law?

⁃ Do we have more fear of God or of Man?

⁃ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr led others to peacefully disobey unjust laws, and many were beaten and jailed for it.

⁃ How do you think of those who followed Dr King’s lead? Were they more like Jesus or like common criminals as we look back in history?

⁃ Are there any unjust laws today? Who suffers as a result of them? What higher law do these laws push against?

Prayer: Cyndi

⁃ 8:28-8:30 PM

⁃ Prayer for us to be directed by the Spirit and to know what God wants us to do about injustice around us.

Prayer: Ezra

⁃ 8:30-8:31 PM

⁃ Prayer for the individual teens who couldn’t make it tonight and were brought specifically to each of our minds. (by name)
