Cyndi’s Discussion: Who do you think God is?

There was a study done some number of years ago where college students were asked to take a test were they answered questions about what they thought they were like. A few months later, they were asked to take a test where they described what they think Jesus’ personality was like. Both tests had basically the same questions, just re-worded. I’ll bet you already know where I’m going with this. They basically unwittingly all said the same thing. They all think Jesus was a lot like them. I think that’s so interesting!
We say “God” a lot. Especially when we say “God loves you”. But who is He? It seems to be very popular for people to think God is whoever they believe He is.

God makes it very clear that this is not the case.

Isaiah 55:8-9 New International Version (NIV)

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

So who is God? The best picture we have is Jesus. they are one God, but 3 persons (which is a long story, which I’m not going to share just yet), but I want to talk about God the Father.
I’m going to share 10 of God’s traits that we are not (which is the list on the left. the list on the right is things we can be):
Infinite Holy
Incomprehensible Loving
Self-Existent Just
Self-Sufficient Good
Eternal Merciful
Immutable Gracious
Omnipresent Longsuffering
Omniscient Wise
Omnipotent

And

Sovereign

It’s very important that we know these things about God, but we need Jesus in order to understand the Father, because God being all powerful or all knowing is not comforting or a reason to celebrate unless you know that God is all loving and has perfect justice
